Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray review

Smart phones seem to keep getting fatter as they pack in more and more functions, and bigger screens to make the most of them. But the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray bucks the trend by slimming down to a sliver 9mm thick, yet still sports a powerful processor and an 8.1-megapixel camera for a mid-range price.
Performance
The 1GHz processor is backed up by an Adreno 205 graphics chip and 512MB of RAM so it keeps things moving along nicely, opening new apps quickly and keeping several running at once with no sign of slowing down.
The 8.1-megapixel camera has a single LED flash and features include auto-focus, face detection, touch to focus, image stabilization and red-eye reduction. It also has the Exmor R picture processor which has been a feature of Sony's mid-to-high end cameras for a while now and helps the camera take better pictures in low light. Picture quality is very good, and though the automatic sensor can struggle in very bright conditions, there are plenty of alternative settings you can play with to get the right picture conditions.
Video recording goes up to 720p HD and looks good even when blown up on a full size TV screen. Unlike Sony Ericsson top-end Xperia Arc S however, there's no HDMI connection that would allow you to play it back directly on an HD TV screen.
As for storage, there's 300MB of built-in memory backed up with a 4GB micro SD card, though you swap that out for a card with up to 32GB of memory if you wish.
While that screen is deliciously sharp, it takes its toll on the 1,500 mAh battery, which barely delivered a full day's worth of heavy use.
Design and software
The 3.3-inch capacitive touch screen offers 854x480 pixels, so it's long and thin, with impressively sharp resolution thanks to Sony's Mobile Bravura Engine, derived from the company's TV technology. It offers 16m co lours but its widescreen orientation does tend to look a little cramped, especially with web pages, and you'll find yourself doing a lot of scrolling.
Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread is the operating system so it's not quite the very latest incarnation, though as usual Sony Ericsson has added a few tweaks of its own to the OS. The icons look different from standard Android and there are some distinctive widgets, not least the Time-scape social networking application, which pulls all your updates into a single scrollable stream.
Facebook also enjoys a greater level of integration - Facebook photo albums appear in your gallery, events in your calendar and you can "like" tunes from within the music player. The audio player also allows you to search for related lyrics and videos as well as identifying mystery tracks on the built-in FM radio using TrackID.
The small screen feels like a limitation, but if you can live with it, there's plenty to like about the Xperia Ray, including its sleek good looks, fast operation and impressive camera.
